Hulkenberg fastest on opening day of Bahrain test
The Formula 1 paddock reassembled in Bahrain for the second winter test of the 2014 season. Nico Hulkenberg was fastest on the opening day, as the Lotus E22 made its public debut and the Renault-powered teams continued to struggle with reliability issues.
The start of the session was delayed by half an hour due to a problem with the track marshals. When the green light eventually opened the Bahrain International Circuit, Romain Grosjean was the first man to leave the pit lane as he revealed the new E22 to rival teams and media.
Teams brought major upgrades to the test but the focus on the first day was still very much on reliability, as well as gaining mileage and data.
