Hamilton crashes after car failure
– Mercedes has confirmed that Lewis Hamilton's opening day crash at Jerez was caused by a car failure. Shortly before 1pm local time (GMT +1), Hamilton slid into the Turn 1 barriers at the Spanish venue, causing considerable damage to the front-end of the new W05, which had broken cover directly ahead of the test. After the accident, Mercedes alluded to a technical issue, with initial reports suggesting that the front wing failed. Hamilton is unlikely to return to action in the afternoon, but he currently leads the way with a 1.27.820.
