Fangio's Mercedes W196 to be auctioned
A rare Mercedes W196 driven by five-time world champion Juan Manuel Fangio, will be auctioned off at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and is expected to fetch more than £10 million. Auctioneers Bonhams believe the car could break the record set by a Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa Prototype which was sold for just over £10 million in 2011. The W196 is one of just a few remaining and the only one in the hands of a private collector. The remaining few examples are owned by Mercedes. The chassis number, 00006/54, was driven by Fangio to victory twice at the 1954 German and Swiss Grands Prix and helped him secure the championship that year.
