Formula 1 pitlane safety takes the spotlight 8 July, 2013 Photographers working in the pitlane Formula 1 faced calls for improved pitlane safety after a cameraman was hit and injured by a bouncing wheel that came off Mark Webber's Red Bull during Sunday's German Grand Prix.
Mechanics wear flameproof overalls and helmets during pitstops but others in the restricted group given access to the pitlane – such as the media – do so without protective headgear.
