P2: Alonso edges out Hamilton
Fernando Alonso gave Ferrari encouragement over their F138's form around the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve as he edged out Montreal specialist Lewis Hamilton to end the opening day of practice on top of the timesheet.After Friday's first track session in Canada had proved more inconclusive than normal owing to morning rain, the afternoon session allowed a somewhat more accurate picture to be formed with Ferrari, Mercedes, Lotus and Red Bull all looking strong in varying ways.
Alonso, desperate to find some consistency to his title challenge after a miserable Monaco, set the ultimate pace at the end of the supersoft tyre runs with a 1:14.818 lap that was a mere 0.012s quicker than Lewis Hamilton...
